YYC Burger Week is right around the corner and with 30 restaurants participating this year, it’s going to be an amazing 9 days of burger insanity. Get your bellies ready Calgary for YYC Burger Week 2014. It’s almost here.
This year the organizing team behind YYC Burger Week decided to add a new twist, bring in some well known food writers, critics and food bloggers to taste test the burgers before Burger Week officially starts. A sort of Sneak-Peak if you will of the restaurants burger creation before the public is allowed in to sample and then vote for their favourite burger. This opportunity allows the burger to be showcased in all it’s glory and the good word spread to burger lovers everywhere, getting the public excited about what is yet to come.
I was one of ten people asked to be a Burger Ambassador this year, and while I knew it was a tough job, I also knew somebody had to do it. I happily accepted the task and restaurants I was asked to visit, and began to plot my decent into burger madness.
My first stop on the Burger Tour, Craft Beer Market. Not your average restaurant, Craft Beer Market is a place where you can go and enjoy fresh food and craft beers from all over the world. In the three years since they first opened their doors, they’ve become an institution known for providing great food and beverages, and with this success, have expanded to both Vancouver and Edmonton.
Craft’s Burger offering for Burger Week 2014 is a Brant Lake Wagyu Beef Burger. And let me tell you it delivers. We start with a roasted garlic and thyme Brant Lake Wagyu patty that literally melts in your mouth the minute you have your first bite. As you are savoring this mouthful of goodness, you are hit with the perfect amount of mushroom duxelle, a lovely companion to the beef. A light salty pick me up from the bacon relish, followed by a little crunch factor from the crispy onions makes you excited about what’s next. The answer comes when you detect a hint of heat at the end of your bite, from the chili in the duxelle. All this served on a house made pretzel bun becomes this delicious experience that starts all over again with the next bite.
One of the highlights of the evening was watching my husband, my burger date, eat his Brant Lake Wagyu Burger. He is a simpleton who likes his beef on a bun with perhaps a slap of cheese if the mood fits. That’s it. I forewarned him this was going to be a fabulous burger unlike what he was used to, and he had to participate in the one bite rule before he started dissecting it. Well he took a bite, took 3 more bites and then continued on to devour his burger. He managed to finish, before me, without talking, but I did hear him mumble “this is so good“. I’d say he might venture over to the dark side a little more often now, and thanks to Craft Beer Market and Chef Eric for showing him the light.
YYC Burger Week starts Friday, May 2nd and goes until Saturday, May 10th. You have 9 days to try as many burgers as you can manage to pack in, and there are some amazing ones out there. Pick up a passport at a participating restaurant, visit some restaurants, take pictures, tell your friends, tweet about it, and vote for your favourite burger. These special promo burgers are only available for a limited time during burger week so don’t delay and don’t walk…run to get yours before it’s too late.
