If you’ve been following along you will know YYC Burger Week starts this Friday, May 2nd and goes until Saturday, May 10th. 30 restaurants are competing in three different categories ($10, $15, $20) and will put up their best burger for 9 days during this epic burger battle. Partial proceeds from every burger sold, goes to Charity. Customers and burger lovers near and far will visit the restaurants, try the burgers, and then vote for their favourite online, in each category.
I have been asked to be a Burger Ambassador this year and with that we are sent on a mission to visit 3 restaurants participating in Burger Week, and within each category. We arrive ready to taste, chat with the Chef’s, Managers, and/or staff about the burger, and review these burgers before Burger Week starts. With the burger photos I have been posting on twitter of late, I can tell you the excitement is starting.
My second stop on the Burger Tasting Tour was Blue Star Diner. Blue Star Diner opened it’s doors in the heart of Bridgeland in August 2011. This small, independently owned neighbourhood gem uses locally produced and organic ingredients, recycles whatever they can, and gives back to their community by supporting local organizations. They also support Mealshare, a Non-Profit Society that works with restaurants to allow customers the opportunity to provide a meal to those in need, by purchasing a designated item on their menu.
I was so excited to try the burger Blue Star Diner calls “The Mighty Bridgeland”. When I read the burger description, all I can say, is they had me at double smoked bacon, well, and Shropshire Blue Cheese. OK maybe the foie butter was enticing to.
Chef Jarod Traxel of Blue Star Diner created this burger and when the platter arrived at our table, it was big. I mean open your mouth as wide as you can, big. It comes with these delicious, crispy french fries that are all things salty and good. But not greasy. Good french fries just make everything better. I was surprised to see not one but two Brant Lake Wagyu beef patties on this burger. Oh My. Next this thick cut double smoked bacon dares you to take a bite. On top of that is a perfectly cooked fried egg, topped with butter lettuce and tomato. Binding it all together is a foie butter, Mum’s (theirs not mine) green tomato relish, Bluestar Mustard, and a hint of the most delicious Shropshire Blue Cheese. This cheese is strong but does not overpower. In fact it’s the perfect glue, along with the foie butter, to this outstanding burger. All carefully placed on a rustic pretzel bun and topped with home made bread and butter pickles. I think it’s safe to say it’s going to be hard to beat this burger.
Husband was my dinner date for round two, and he downed his burger again, without coming up for air very often. Always a good sign.
