5 Things to do in Yogyakarta

Dec 27, 2018 · Leave a Comment

Yogyakarta (Yogya or Jogja for short) offers a very different view of Indonesia, one that is the complete opposite of what you would experience in Bali.

Baker family in Borobudur
Baker Family at the temple of Borobudur

Sharing an island with Jakarta, the more laid back Yogyakarta is the soul of Indonesia, keeping the spirit in perfect balance and harmony. Jakarta we are told, is the business centre of Indonesia, powering the economy and the industries.

Street Musicians Jogja
Street Musicians Jogja

Jogja offers the most authentic variation of the Javanese language, arts, traditions, culture and even landscape as many of it is untouched by tourism with the exception of Borobudur and Prambanan.

We planned on two full days in Yogyakarta with one of those days exploring the temples. We soon learned we could have easily spent more time exploring both the city and beyond.

Check out our 5 Things to do in Yogyakarta.

Borobudur Temple

One hour out of Jogja, high on a mountain, sits Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world, built in the 8th and 9th Century AD. It was built 300 years before Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

Borobudur
Borobudur Stupas | Photo Credit: Wanda Baker

This magnificent temple is built in three tiers and outshines any temples you will see in Bali.

Beginning the decent up Borobudur
From the bottom of Borobudur you can’t see the stupas at the top | Wanda Baker Photo

The first tier is a pyramid base with five concentric square terraces. Second tier the trunk of a cone with three circular platforms and the top tier is a monumental stupa.

Magnificent Borobudur
So many stories carved into the stones in the Borobudur Temple

Laid out in the form of a lotus, the sacred flower of Buddha, Buddhist belief states the closer you are to Heaven, the closer you are to the gods. For many reasons I have been drawn to the Buddhist beliefs and felt very at peace here which could have intuitively lead me to choosing the Lotus Flower for my tattoo.

As you climb the steps up the temple, the lush green landscape of Indonesia reveals itself in every direction leaving you feeling quite connected to the ethereal beauty of Borobudur and the stunning view that surrounds it.

Stunning views from the top of Borobudur
Me and my boy in the temple of Borobudur | Wanda Baker Photo

While there are many tours available that get you going early so you can get to Borobudur to see the sunrise, we were quite content visiting the temple during the day. Determine what matters to you and go for it.

Borobudur is listed as a World Heritage Unesco Site.

Jogja Tips:

There are friendly security guards everywhere and they will not allow you to climb on the temple’s stupas to touch the Budha’s hands inside the cone. Apparently this is a thing with tourists hopeful a wish will be granted. It can actually damage the temple.

Malioboro Road

The street called Jalan Malioboro straddles a line from Mount Merapi in the north to Parangtritis Beach in the south. It’s known as a shopping destination for those looking to fully immerse themselves in the Indonesian culture.

Malioboro Road

An interesting mix of architecture awaits you including Dutch colonial-era architecture, modern building architecture mixed with contemporary commercial areas and a strong Chinese shopping district.

China Town off Mairboro Street

If shopping is your thing be sure to start at one end and wear some comfortable shoes. This street goes on for miles and is crammed on each side with kiosks, department stores and markets selling batiks, traditional Javanese sculpture, artwork, and food.

A visit to the Sultan’s Palace (Kraton) is not far away and another sight to see if venturing down Malioboro Road.

Jogja Tips

The best way to get around Yogyakarta is by downloading the GOJEK App and ordering a GO-CAR. These cars are the Uber of Yogyakarta and are very cheap. A 30 minute ride cost us $2-3 Canadian dollars.

Prambanan Temple

Prambanan Temple is the largest Hindu temple in South-East Asia comprised of several temples including the main ones (Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma). It was built 50 years after Borobudur and is about a 1 hour 20 minute drive from Borobudur.

Built in the 10th century, this temple represents a masterpiece of human creative genius with it’s architecture illustrating a significant stage in human history and dedication to Shiva.

In 2006 an earthquake struck Yogyakarta leaving major damage to Prambanan.

It took 9 years of research and restoration to fully restore Prambanan Temple and even now there are many temples still in pieces waiting to be reconstructed.

Prambanan
Prambanan – so many stories in these stones | Wanda Baker Photo

In total Prambanan is a complex made up of 240 temples, several hundred of which remain in pieces. Still a sight to behold.

Jogja Tips:

Many smaller temples have been destroyed by earthquakes, volcanoes and time. Many still remain in their original spots with the crumbed stones surrounding them.

Prambanan is listed as a World Heritage Unesco Site.

Kraton Palace (Sultans Palace)

Yogyakarta is the only region in Indonesia governed by a hereditary monarchy.

The Kraton is home to the Sultan, Hamengkubuwono X but is also a centre for Javanese performing arts, and a living museum featuring both contemporary Indonesian history and the royal line of Yogyakarta.

Entering the Sultan's Palace in Jogja

The total area of the Kraton covers the equivalent of three football fields, however the main cultural area for tourists is known as the Kedaton and is only a small portion of the palace.

At the palace, there are many cultural performances to take in such as a puppet shadow play, Javanese orchestra, and Javanese dance. We had the opportunity to take in a Gamelan performance.

Jogja Tips:

The entire tour should take only 2 – 3 hours at a leisurely pace. You may find friendly Indonesians approach you and ask to take your photo, interview you or want to be in the photo with you.

Get some Ink

There are many prominent and well known tattoo artists throughout Indonesia as getting some ink is apparently a very popular experience to have while there.

Doing the research in advance is key to ensuring you get a reputable artist known for a clean studio and tools. You further will want to read the reviews, view their portfolio, and have an idea of what you want when you arrive for your appointment.

Lotus Tattoo
A powerful spiritual symbol, the Lotus Flower has its roots in the mud, at the bottom of streams and ponds. It grows to become the most beautiful flower despite it’s origins. The seed symbolizes spiritual growth and development and the ability to rise above obstacles while on our journey to enlightenment.

My first tattoo was in the 1990’s before tattoos were popular. I went in looking for a story to tell, a piece of art to represent an adventure or the place I was at that point in my life. To this day this is still how I still choose my tattoos.

A tattoo is a very personal and individual experience. It’s a good idea to google and find several ideas you like and have some sort of idea when you arrive.

Your tattoo artist is an artist and they will not copy anyone’s design and they shouldn’t. These artists should take the concept and make it their own design. Having an idea of what you want makes their job easier.

We knew as soon as we settled on traveling to Bali, the souvenirs Rob and I would leave with would be tattoos.

Triquetra, Celtic Triangle or Trinity Knot
Triquetra, Celtic Triangle or Trinity Knot: This tattoo represents a three way unity

We made the appointment, showed up with the kids who were entirely fascinated we were doing this (we did not tell them in advance) and they both watched Rob and I get tattooed at the same time.

Having done this before, I had no doubt our experience would be good. We would recommend Eric at the Jolly Roger Tattoo in Yogyakarta if you are looking to get some ink while there.

Jogja Tips

It’s really important to do your research when looking for a reputable tattoo artist and follow the instructions once you have your tattoo, ie: no salt water. This will ensure you have the best tattoo experience and it heals up nicely.

The Final Word

We only booked two full days in Jogja but could easily have stayed longer as there was much more to see considering our first plan was to visit Jakarta.

Experiences for next time: explore secret beaches like Watu Lumbung Beach or Wedi Ombo Beach in Gunungkidu, visit the lazy river at the Goa Pindul, see the Taman Sari, visit some waterfalls to see how they compare to Canadian waterfalls.

5 Things to do in Ubud

Dec 20, 2018 · Leave a Comment

What Ubud lacks in sandy beaches and coastlines, it makes up for with green lush valleys, nature adventures, historical sites, an arts district and a groovy shopping scene.

Temple at Goa Gajah
Temple at Goa Gajah

Start your Ubud Bali adventure wandering along the Jalan Raya Ubud main road and be sure to stop along all the side streets you will encounter in search of hidden gems and coffee shops.

Surrounding villages offer adventures of a new kind including cascading rice paddies, sacred water temples, archaeological sites, master painters, woodcarvers and goldsmiths.

Tegallalang Rice Fields
Tegallalang Rice Fields

Ubud is more than a day trip, it is a place so laid back you could totally stay awhile. From yoga retreats and spas to the mysterious and magical, a trip to Bali is not complete without a visit to Ubud.

Here are our Top 5 things to do in Ubud.

Ubud Monkey Forest

The Sacred Monkey Forest is located in the village of Padangtegal, and fun fact; the forest is also owned by this village. There are several points of interest beyond the 700 monkeys who roam the forest including 186 species of trees and several interesting statues to admire.

Monkey Forest Selfie

We learned in advance the monkey’s can bite, and be brats, and since they are wild animals, their behaviour is not surprising.

These critters are smart so if you are brave enough to have food, water or anything of attraction available on your person, you will become a monkey target too.

Monkey Forest Ubud
See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil – 3 wise monkey’s

Since the Monkey Forest is mostly shaded with trees it’s a nice day experience to have as it allows a reprieve from the hot Bali sun.

Spending a day at the Sacred Monkey Forest observing how the monkey’s interact with themselves and tourists is definitely an experience one must have while visiting Ubud.

Ubud Tips:

Do your research before you go, be prepared and always be on alert

Stroll through Tegalalang Rice Fields

The cultural landscape of Bali has been listed as one of Indonesia’s eight unique Unesco World Heritage sites with five rice terraces and their water temples covering 19,500 ha.

The cooperative water management system of canals and weirs, known as subak, dates back to the 9th century. Tegallalang Rice Fields was created using a subak, the traditional Balinese irrigation system.

Tegalalang Rice Fields
Tegalalang Rice Fields

This system, according to the Balinese, signifies the connections that exist between the human, spirit and natural worlds.

Tegalalang Rice Fields
Trekking though the Tegalalang Rice Fields

Tegalalang Rice Fields is one of Bali’s most popular tourist locations and it can get busy, but it’s really more than that.

The ancient valley offers a timeless quality and slightly larger than life experience.

The out skirts of the rice fields provides cafes for a beverage break, restaurants if hungry, art market vendors for souvenirs and is only about a 30 minute drive from Ubud.

Ubud Tips:

The steps taking you down through the fields are steep and one will need to be prepared to make the trek.

Goa Gajah Elephant Caves

Discovered in 1922, Goa Gajah dates back to the 11th century and is known as the elephant temple created as a spiritual place for meditation.

The cave itself is small and your tour through the grounds will not take very long. It is however an archeological attraction showcasing the Hindu temple, statues, ponds and fountains.

Goa Gajah Elephant Caves
Goa Gajah Elephant Caves in Ubud

When you first arrive you must pass a myriad of vendors trying to sell you their wares and locals acting as tour guides.

A tour guide is not required to explore the grounds and if you pre-purchased sarongs as we suggested in another post, you will not need to buy one here. Best advice, blow right past the vendors, the guides and do your own self guided tour.

Being blessed by an elder
Being blessed by an elder

Once you have experienced the cave, wander around the pool and follow a narrow path leading deep into the jungle and down a ravine. You will see waferfalls, an ancient forest, caves, giant bamboo trees and additional ruins left in their resting place.

Ubud Tips:

You are required to wear a sarong to enter Goa Gajah

Ubud Art Market

In the heart of Ubud you will find the Ubud market place sure to awaken all your senses and give you the full Balinese cultural experience.

Ubud Art Market Entry
Ubud Art Market Entry

Shopping in this traditional market is not necessarily about the purchase, but more about the bargaining process and careful viewing of unique craftsmanship and artistry of the Balinese people.

The shopping here is very different than what you would find in Kuta, Seminyak, Sanur or any of the other touristy shopping areas. It’s more authentic and it feels more like the real deal as you chat with the vendors about their products.

The sights, colours and people of the Ubud Art Market
The sights, colours and people of the Ubud Art Market

Here you will find many things like beautiful silk scarves, sarongs and dresses, lightweight shirts, handmade woven bags, baskets or hats; statues, kites, wooden boards, hand painted figurines and many other hand-crafted goods.

Our kids learned the art of bartering and the skills of negotiating and conversing with the locals. This experience is something they will always be able to reflect upon.

Ubud Tips:

Learning to barter is a skill that can take a few times to get right. The vendors are fun to barter with and will typically only drop in price until they can no longer offer a deal. Enjoy the experience!

Go Treasure Hunting

A unique experience for kids of all ages includes Geocaching. We’ve geocached our way through Western Canada for the last 10 years and it never gets old.

Geocaching in Bali
Geocaching in Bali

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Treasure hunters (us) navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the hidden geocache or treasure typically found in any size of container hidden at that particular location.

Geocaching in Bali
Found a cache

It’s as simple as visiting geocaching.com to create an account and then finding a cache near you.

Some times it involves taking something from the cache (box), mostly when the kids are young as there are small toys you can take if you leave an item behind. Signing the log book and leaving tips or hints online is a fun part of the process.

We totally switch modes when we are geocaching and become quite competitive with each other while trying to find the cache.

Both my boys are involved with Scouts Canada as both a Scout and Leader so finding a cache while in Bali was a high priority.

We successfully found a cache while in Ubud, dropped a trackable and a few Scouts Canada Badges, returned the cache and were on our way to find a new adventure.

Other notable mentions:

Take a cooking class while in Ubud. We took one and wrote about it here Cooking with Bali Manggang in Indonesia.

Local food experiences we loved: Three Monkeys Cafe Bali, visiting French cafe, Daily Baguette for cheese, bread, and sandwiches, eat with locals and discover Warungs, try local pizza at Umah Pizza, chill out at Atman Cafe, Frozen Yogi – need I say more.

Three Monkeys Cafe Bali

Experiences on our radar for next time Campuhan Ridge Walk, visit the Neka Art Museum or Antonio Blanco Museum, Lotus pond at Saraswati temple and visiting a medicine man.

15 Experiences to have in Bali

Dec 13, 2018 · Leave a Comment

Visiting South East Asia is not something many people in Canada consider during the winter months. Most of us like to hop on a plane, fly South quickly seeking a warmer destination to help cope with even longer winters.

While it takes two full travel days to get to South East Asia from Alberta, Canada, Indonesia is a destination everyone should consider at least one time in their lives.

At the Airport in Calgary
Getting ready for the first flight of three

We planned our trip about 10 months in advance, carefully reviewing and selecting adventures that interested us, finalizing our details closer to our departure date and even while we were in Bali.

When you only have a certain number of days in your vacation, making the most of your time is essential and everyone’s needs are different.

These are our top 15 experiences to have in Bali.

Uluwatu Temple and Balinese Kecak and Fire Dance

Uluwatu itself is a small surfers village on the southern most tip of Bali, south of Jimbaran known for the famous Uluwatu Temple found high on the cliffs of Uluwatu and close to the amphitheater for the Kecak and Fire Dance.

The drive to the Uluwatu area will take approximately 30 minutes and is not for the faint of heart. The winding, curvy roads are narrow and busy with all kinds of traffic heading in and out of the area. But don’t let that deter you.

Kecak and Fire Dance
Kecak and Fire Dance with Uluwatu Temple in background

Since a forest surrounds the temple and amphitheater, at some point you will encounter any number of monkeys believed to guard the temple from bad spirits. They are without a doubt mischievous little critters as watched them chewing on car antennas, pulling off trim and taunting tourists without a care in the world.

The performance begins at sunset. Kecak is a unique Balinese dance accompanied by a choir of approximately seventy men who chant and sway in unison as the story of Ramayana and Prince Rama’s quest to rescue his beloved wife Sita unfolds.

Bali Tip: Sarongs are required to cover the knees if visiting the temple.

Kecak and Fire Dance
Note the figure rising up from the fire over the monkey at the Kecak and Fire Dance. No one else captured or saw this until I pointed it out.

Padang Padang Beach

If you are going to Uluwatu, set aside a few hours to visit Padang Padang Beach located on the north-western side of the Island a short distance away. There is an entrance fee to go to the beach however it’s affordable at $1.00 or 10,000 rupiahs per person.

Entrance to Padang Padang Beach
Entrance to Padang Padang Beach

This popular beach is only accessible via a narrow rock corridor. In the right weather it can be a very pretty destination with the white sand and aquamarine waters. It was an overcast day for us and while we didn’t experience the aquamarine water, we had an experience of another kind.

Pedang Pedang Beach
Kids taking a dip at Pedang Pedang Beach

During our visit we stumbled upon what we believe to be the tail end of a Hindu cremation ceremony. Tradition states 12 days after the Ngaben (cremation ceremony) the ashes of the deceased are taken to a river or the ocean to be scattered. This represents the spirit’s transition into Moksha or a sort of paradise where reincarnation, and, in turn, death, ends.

Bali Tip:  Try to go early in the day to secure a spot on the beach as space is limited.

Spa Days

Pretty self explanatory right? I mean who doesn’t like a good massage. I went a few times over the course of our three weeks and paid between $5-$10 for a one hour massage. My daughter and I also had facials.

With so many massage shops in Bali and regular solicitation from the employees as you walk down the street, it’s important you do a little research before committing to one.

Bali Tip: If you enjoyed your experience, leave them a tip. Balinese people make on average $6,000/year so they rely heavily on the kindness of tourists.

Cook like a Local

Take a couple hours and learn what makes Indonesian cuisine so special. Discover new to you ingredients and experience new tastes and textures. Familiarize yourself with new cooking methods or techniques.

Family Cooking Class
Cooking together at a cooking class in Bali

If you are committed to eating cuisine in a new country, taking a class with a local Chef is an experience you will not want to miss. Learn more about the cooking class we took with our kids at Bali Manggang in Ubud.

Bali Tip: Do not go for the first cooking class you find, or the cheapest. Take the time to discover through research the one that best suits your situation.

Snorkeling Tour

Bali has a rich assortment of beaches, some with big rocks created by corals or lava to those fully covered with sand.

While not all beaches are suitable for swimming due to the waves, there are several boat excursions you can take for an ultimate snorkeling adventure.

Snorkeling near Nusa Penida
Snorkeling near Nusa Penida

Our adventure included a speed boat to Nusa Penida, an island off the southwest coast of Bali. We were taken to four areas, Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay, Wall Bay, Manta Ray Bay around the island to snorkel with the fish, sea life and what we had hoped would be Manta Rays.

Typically plan for a full day trip, bring lots of water and sunscreen.

Bali Tip: Do your research. While our snorkeling tour itself was alright, we would never book with the company we went with again.

Spend a Couple Days in Ubud

When traveling to Bali, one must experience Ubud, a town 1-2 hours inland and set amongst rice paddies, steep ravines with lush forests that gives off a very different vibe then the communities along the beaches of Bali. We spent five nights in Ubud and could easily have stayed longer.

Ubud Streets
Wandering through Ubud with the Monkey Forest ahead
Ubud offers a fabulous marketplace and hundreds of shops selling antiques, woodcarvings, crafts, textiles, paintings and jewellery. There are fabulous cafes and cozy coffee shops on every street either out in display or off around a corner.
Art studios, galleries and museums can be found on main street and tucked away down side streets.
Bali Tip: Plan to stay a minimum 2-3 days and take in as much of Ubud as you can.

Adopt a Turtle

Take a tour through the Turtle Conservation and Education Centre on Serangan Island to learn about how they are helping save turtles.

This center helps protect turtles by hosting injured ones, collecting nests from tourist beaches and buying eggs from locals to prevent them being eaten. Eggs are bred at the center and raised for about one month before being released into the ocean.

In addition the center focuses on eradicating illegal turtle trading on the Island which is still very much a thing as locals will eat them or use them as offerings.

Turtle Conservation and Education Center Serangan Island
Turtle Conservation and Education Center Serangan Island

It’s free to visit, you get a guide to show you around and there are turtles to observe including babies plus injured ones in recovery.

They offer souvenirs for purchase, accept donations and allow you to adopt a little fella who will be released into the ocean. When adopting you pick your little guy, name him, receive an adoption certificate and video sent to you when he is released into the ocean.

Turtle Conservation and Education Center Serangan Island

Bali Tip: This sanctuary is not Turtle Island, which is not recommended and does not have good reviews.

Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park

The magnificent iconic landmark Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue or GWK for short is a symbol of the Hindu God Vishnu riding his mount, the great mythical eagle Garuda. The statue stands watch over the island and can be seen from several key points in Bali including Double Six Beach and Kuta Beach.

GWK Statue
Thumbs up at the GWK Statue

25 years in the making and still not finished, it’s a little bit of a hike to get to GWK itself, however as you wander along you pass the Lotus Pond, temples, restaurants and coffee shops, and plazas. Or you can rent a segway.

In the park itself and beyond GWK you can learn about the Balinese heritage through the cultural performances, legendary folklore tales, sculptures besides GWK and dramatic cinematic presentations.

Lotus pond
Lotus pond at GWK Cultural Park

While the statue is not yet accessible on the inside leaving you with outside views only, there is something to be said about being in the presence of one of the largest and highest monumental statues in the world. We loved it.

Bali Tip: Admission costs will run you about 450,000 IDR or $10 per person and it’s hot so bring lots of water and plan to take your time.

Waterbom Park

Waterbom is a fun water adventure park for kids of all ages and they even have a swim up bar for the grown ups. The park is beautifully landscaped, very clean and seamlessly connects all the rides, paths, bridges, bathing areas and pools.

Waterbom
Coming off one of the extreme rides

They operate on a waterproof wrist band system where everyone entering wears a wrist band also known as cashless payment. You preload it with money and lock up your wallet in a locker you rent.

The band allows you to buy drinks, food or the few attractions that cost money by simply scanning your wrist band. The amount is deducted and whatever balance is left at the end of the day gets returned to you in cash.

The main pool at Waterbom
The main pool

Like in Disneyland there are photographers throughout the park who will take photos and scan your wrist band allowing you to purchase photos at the end of the day. This park will definitely appeal to the thrill seeker in you. Our crew had a great time exploring this park.

Bali Tip: Try to book your tickets at least a day or two in advance and reserve a cabana if you plan on staying the day.

Catch a Wave

Bali is one of the most popular surf destinations in the world. According to the Bali people, you will find the warmest weather and best time to enjoy the waves without crowds from October through September.

The rainy season typically runs November – March, however we were there for three weeks in November and only experienced rain on the day we were leaving Bali.

Surf Lessons with Situm

The beaches are loaded with vendors wanting to sell you their goods, surf lessons and even a few chairs where you can enjoy Bintangs, pop or water.

Surf lessons successful

It’s easy to find a surf instructor, simply wander the beach until you find one available to give you a lesson or book them for later. Our surf instructor: Situm Tour Bali Adventure at Double Six Beach.

Bali Tip: Three hour surf lessons are pretty cheap. $20 per person plus tip included the board rental.

Stay at an All Inclusive

If you didn’t know Bali had All Inclusives, you do now. If you’ve stayed in this kind of resort and it’s totally your jam, this might just be the place for you. Our first 5 days in Bali was spent at the Grand Mirage Resort & Thalasso Bali in Benoa.

We chose not to do the all inclusive package due to our desire to hit the streets running and not be tied to any one place for food.

We did however opt in for a daily continental breakfast and it was one of the most amazing continental breakfasts featuring both Western and Indonesian cuisine complete with hot and cold food stations.

Grand Mirage Resort Swim Up Bar

Bali Tip: Benoa does not offer swimmer friendly beaches.

Stay in a Villa

Plan your trip far enough in advance and you will find some wicked deals on private villas in Bali. We stayed in two, with the first villa in Ubud, the Samhita Garden Hotel, which we actually stumbled upon by accident.

Bali Tip: Bali has all kinds of critters than tend to come out at night. If you hear a strange noise, it’s quite possible one of them.

Visit Temples

Bali is over 80% Hindu and boasts over 20,000 temples. Many families have shrines in their homes, next to their businesses even at the front door.

Next to a temple is the offering prepared daily to give thanks for the food and feed the spirits so they do not become angry.

There are famous temples in Bali to visit and those you will stumble across just walking down the street. Whatever the case may be they are all fascinating and an delicately prepared work of art.

We were fortunate enough to see a few notable ones during our trip including Goa Gajah, Uluwatu, Borobudur and Prambanan. The rest we will save until we return.

Entering a temple requires knees be covered. Be sure to note the rules of each temple before you visit.

Bali Tip: Purchase a sarong locally at Hardy’s when you arrive and carry one with you when you are sight seeing.

Try the Poop Coffee (Kopi Luwak)

Eloquently put, Kopi Luwak, or civet coffee, is coffee that includes partially digested coffee cherries, eaten and pooped out by the Asian palm civet critter. Since it can not digest the coffee beans out they come through the poop shoot.

Fermentation occurs as the cherries pass through a civet’s intestines, and after being defecated are collected, cleaned and roasted.

Luwak
Luwak

Farm workers collect the beans, clean and wash them. At this point they have acquired a unique and highly prized taste from their passage through the luwak’s digestive tract.

The coffee is really quite good and we had no issue trying it. Do you eat mushrooms?! Mushrooms you buy in the store have been grown in poop so BAM you’ve probably already eaten poop remnants so why not try poop coffee. See what I did there?!

Bali Tip: A cup of Luwak coffee at a coffee stop will run you about $5. A bag of Luwak coffee a whole lot more.

Cooking with Bali Manggang in Indonesia

Dec 2, 2018 · 12 Comments

Taking a cooking class in a new country is one of the most exhilarating experiences you can have while traveling abroad. Sure there are beach and water sports, touring around to learn about history and art, even eating out with the locals.

Yet when it comes right down to it, food is the bond that ties us all together. Anthony Bourdain showed us this many times through his travels.

If you want to learn about the local culture, a food class is how you can fully immerse yourself into the thick of it.

These days when we travel our trips are family experiences. We only have so many years we can travel with our kids before they fly the coop to live their own lives and have their own experiences.

When we plan a trip, the kids are part of the planning process. Even if it’s to say I want to see Mickey Mouse. By enabling them to be involved, they ultimately have a say in how their trip experience turns out.

We consider activities the kids want to do, adventures the adults want to do and combine it all so we can enjoy the experiences together.

Here I am cooking away
Here I am cooking away

My adventure choice for this trip, a cooking class of course. I was thrilled with how enthusiastic the entire family was about taking a cooking class with me before we left Canada and when we arrived in Bali.

An Indonesian Cooking Class

We booked three weeks in Indonesia and they were broken into four experiences. Our second leg was in Ubud and that is where we decided to research cooking classes.

We browsed brochures, reviewed online classes and finally decided to book our class at Bali Manggang with Chef Made Latra. Ubud ended up being the perfect setting for a cooking class.

Using fresh Ingredients
Using fresh Ingredients

Chef Made picked us up at our villa for the afternoon session. Along the way he took us to a coffee stop where we sampled local teas, coffees and were given the option to try the Kopi Luwak (poop coffee). Once our tasting was done we carried on to Chef Made’s home, the location of the cooking class.

How to choose a cooking class

When there are so many cooking classes to choose from, how do you pick? Gather cooking class brochures to review or google. Check off what is important to you. For us it was menu, cost, times offered, transportation, cleanliness and reviews.

We narrowed it down to two and tossed the other brochures away. We made contact and the first one to respond was the one we booked with. Chef Made was on it and we heard from him almost immediately.

Why take a cooking class

Taking a cooking class does not mean you need to start cooking Indonesian food at home. The experience is learning about ingredients other cultures use, techniques and cooking methods.

For example we learned about galangal, a spice relative to ginger that can be used in any recipe calling for ginger.

Additionally it was fascinating to see the Chef use coconut husks to start the grill. He says this is because the husks release less smoke.

Coconut husk fire starters

We had no clue our cooking class would be in the Chef’s home and were awestruck to experience walking through his homestead to get to the class room.

As we wandered to our class, we caught a glimpse of the sleeping quarters, a communal kitchen, shared dining area and even passed a few of the family members along the way. Experiencing how Balinese live was almost as exciting as the class itself.

When we arrived in the kitchen we discovered the view of the Petanu Ravine. A cooking class with a view – doesn’t get much better than that.

Petanu Ravine
Our view – Petanu Ravine

Once we settled in, took pictures of the view and were given a welcome beverage we aproned up and got straight to work.

Chef had several tasks for us to do from grinding peanuts for peanut sauce, chopping, cooking with the prepared ingredients, plating and even styling the plate with garnishes. This part made me laugh. He knew we would be taking pictures.

Grinding peanuts for peanut sauce

Our menu was simple with big flavours. We made the following dishes:

  • Basko Soup (Tuna fish ball)
  • Tofu and Soya Bean Curry
  • Nasi Goreng (Balinese Fried Rice)
  • Bakmi Goreng (Balinese Fried Noodle)
  • Chicken Satay (Sate Bumbu Rujak) with Peanut Sauce
  • Sayur Urap (Vegetable with Coconut Sauce)
  • Pisang Rai (Banana Dumpling with Coconut & Sugar)
Cooking
I like this photo because one is happy, one scowling and one sampling

There were six of us in the cooking class. Four Canadians (us) and a lovely couple from London.

We all dove in to try the food and had a glorious time chatting with our mates from Britain about their adventures so far.

We bonded over food, shared stories and made lasting memories.

City Cruising in the 2018 Ford Mustang Convertible

Sep 18, 2018 · Leave a Comment

As iconic as the mountains and plains of this great province, the Mustang embodies the epitome of open-road driving. Symbolized by a galloping horse, the freedom and excitement associated with the Mustang mirrors that of our western spirit.

Nothing quite screams summer like cruising around in a convertible. When opportunity knocked this summer to test drive the Ford Mustang EcoBoost Convertible, well, we did what any sane person would do and jumped at the chance.

Cruising through the neighbourhood in the Ford Mustang
There I am cruising through the neighbourhood in the Ford Mustang. Looks good on me, right?!

Having once owned a Jeep YJ, I was very familiar with a standard transmission but it had been awhile since I last drove one. Fortunately it was like riding a bike, it all came back instantly and I remember how enjoyable this style of transmission was to drive.

For several years Ford has offered the EcoBoost engine in its vehicles. For those that do not know, like me, an EcoBoost engine is a combination of turbocharging and direct fuel injection that improves fuel economy without sacrificing engine power.

The Ford Mustang EcoBoost Convertible comes in your base model with a 6-Speed Manual Transmission and a 2.3L EcoBoost Engine. The starting price tag is $31,994. With this you get a rear view camera, TrackApps™, LED Headlamps with LED Signature Lighting, Intelligent Access with Push Button Start (one of my favourite features), Dual Bright Exhaust with Rolled Tips, Enhanced Security Package, Wheel Locking Kit, SYNC®, Enhanced Voice Recognition Communications and Entertainment System with 6 speakers, and Active Anti Theft System.

Nice, right? Of course you can customize your package through the Ford Canada website – my husband didn’t waste any time pricing out the perfect Mustang for us.

Ford Mustang Interior
Ford Mustang Interior

The interior is elegant, with lots of well planned detail. There is plenty of legroom in the front and the kids were not squished while they rode in the back seats. The trunk storage is huge. It doesn’t fit the family dog, but I’d give up our miniature pony (rough collie) for the Mustang. Ha ha ha, just kidding kids!

Driving the Deerfoot with the top down
Driving the Deerfoot with the top down – I told her it would be windy

While parked, the convertible top goes down in a matter of seconds with a quick twist of a handle and push of a button. A far cry from the days of having to take the top off my jeep, myself!

This is not a car for the faint of heart. It might not be a GT, BULLITT or offer a large engine but it has power and speed to spare, and for this kid that was simply enough. The colour of our Convertible Mustang was Orange Fury. Kind of an ironic way to end the summer considering we started the summer driving an orange 2018 Ford EcoSport!

Boys being boys they had to look under the hood
Boys being boys they had to look under the hood

The one thing you notice when driving a car like this, is all the other Mustangs everywhere. You find out quickly you are in a brother or sisterhood of Mustang drivers. You pass one they wave at you, so you wave back feeling like you are now a part of a special and secret ‘hood.

Also important to note is why people with sports cars park far away from everyone else in parking lots – you do not want your car to get one ding or scratch on it. We obviously followed suit.

During our week with the Mustang we were treated to a trail ride adventure at Boundary Ranch, a working ranch in the Kananaskis Valley of the Canadian Rockies. Our ridge ride took us through lush forest, steep climbs and equally steep descents, offering what would normally be breath taking views of mountains and forest although some of our view was obstructed by the forest fire smoke.

Lush forest views during our Boundary Ranch Trail ride

Following our peaceful and serene ride through the mountains, we were served up a delicious cowboy steak lunch.

Boundary Ranch trail ride
Boundary Ranch trail ride

This authentic cowboy experience was full of Western hospitality. Other activities at the ranch include longer pack trips, barbecues, horse-drawn wagon rides, pony rides, white water rafting, and dog sled rides working in collaboration with Mad Dogs & Englishmen. What a treat it was to experience this ranch and the horses symbolizing the wild spirit of the Ford Mustang.

Taking the friends for a ride
Taking the friends for a ride

Through pricing out a mustang on the Ford Website, we discovered this car is affordable and one we could quite nicely see ourselves cruising around in once the kids have flown the coop. There are several colours to choose from including black, white, silver, magnetic, red, blue, green and of course orange. We loved all the colours but really enjoyed the uniqueness of the orange.

If you were buying a Mustang, what colour would you pick?!

Disclosure: Ford Canada gave us a 2018 Ford Mustang EcoBoost Convertible to test drive for a week and a complimentary trail ride at Boundary Ranch. As always, opinions are my own based on our experience.

Weekend Road Trip in the 2018 Ford EcoSport

Jul 28, 2018 · Leave a Comment

We essentially are a Ford family and may be becoming a Ford neighbourhood. Both my husband and I drive older Ford Explorers (2002 and 1992) and my brother just bought a 2004 Ford Explorer to go with his Ford Edge. My cousin here in Calgary works for Ford so of course drives Ford vehicles. Our neighbours to the North also drive Fords and I’m sure I’ve seen a few other Ford vehicles driving down our street. See what I mean?!

We teamed up with Ford Canada for a road trip to Edmonton for our son’s Provincial U12 Boys Fastpitch Tournament. They asked us to test out the Ford EcoSport and we jumped at the opportunity to test out another one of Ford’s vehicles.

We were on our way to a tournament so it was important we had reliable wheels to get us to the hotel and back to the ball diamond, a smaller vehicle big enough to haul our gear and one that could offer comfort after a long, potentially rainy or overly hot day of baseball.

Ford EcoSport Storage
Ford EcoSport Storage | Back of SUV has lots of storage

What we got was an Orange Ford EcoSport! Just so happens the boys Fastpitch team name: Orange Crush. Team jersey colour: orange. It was a match made in heaven. For this weekend the EcoSport affectionately became known as the Orange Crush Team Car.

Ford EcoSport

The Ford Ecosport is the newest compact SUV to enter the Canadian Market, although it’s not new to the North American Market as it’s been in the USA for close to ten years. When you are used to driving a beast around the city and on road trips, getting into a compact SUV sure has it’s perks. Especially when it comes to parking and gas mileage.

Here are some of the features we loved about the EcoSport.

Ford EcoSport
Ford EcoSport & Canola Fields

Ford EcoSport Perks

Technology at it’s best:

  • The Blind Spot Information System was way cool. It uses radar to identify a vehicle detected in your blind spot and alerts you with an indicator light in either of the two outside mirrors. Already thinking about how this could potentially deter some accidents.
Blind Spot Information System
Blind Spot Information System
  • We really preferred the 8 inch colour screen located on top of the dash versus inset allowing easier use. It has enhanced voice-recognition and is a touchscreen with swipe and zoom functionality.
  • Two USB ports, two 12-volt outlets and a 110V outlet allows for up to ten devices connected at once. Our busy family of four definitely needs something like this when travelling.
  • MyKey technology gives you several programing options however the one we enjoyed the most was the warning when the fuel tank got below 120 kilometers.

Ford EcoSport fuel low indicator
Ford EcoSport fuel low indicator

On the Go:

  • Auto Start-Stop Technology. We had this last year when we drove the Ford C-Max Electric Hybrid and it still blows my mind how the vehicle literally turns off to help reduce fuel consumption and emissions at stop lights and signs.
  • Automatic windshield wipers. This is Calgary. You have to be prepared for any weather at any time. It was a pleasant surprise to have the wipers come on by themselves when it started to rain.
Ford EcoSport Cargo Area
Ford EcoSport Cargo Area | Photo Credit Ford Canada
  • An adjustable cargo area featuring a rear cargo shelf we could move to store important stuff. This really is like a secret storage space you would never know was there!
  • Great gas mileage. Did I mention I drive a beast?!

We’ve hi-lighted a few of the features in the new Ford Ecosport that appealed to us but there are many more features in this compact SUV to suit everyone. We had the best time driving around Edmonton in the EcoSport as well as running errands and touring Calgary. It’s a great family vehicle and the Titanium model offers a lot of the features we as a family need for convenience. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to friends and even purchase one in the future.

Disclosure: Ford Canada gave us a 2018 Ford EcoSport Titanium Compact SUV to test drive on our trip to Edmonton for the ball tournament. As always, opinions are my own based on our experience.

Enjoy Modern Comfort at the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Edmonton

Jul 16, 2018 · Leave a Comment

Edmonton is the northernmost North American city with a population of just over one million people. It is also home to North America’s largest mall, the West Edmonton Mall, spanning 48 city blocks. There is plenty to see and do in Edmonton besides the West Edmonton Mall including Fort Edmonton Park, Aga Khan Garden, Telus World of Science, Rogers Place plus more. We have visited a few times, however on this visit our main focus was a ball tournament.

Fairfield now and then

When you have kids and are traveling for sports or activities, it’s very important to have a comfortable stay since you are typically exhausted at the end of the day. Add any breakfast that beats a Tim Horton’s drive through and you are set. We found everything we needed at the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott in Edmonton when my son got picked up to play in a boys Fastpitch ball tournament earlier this month.

Fairfield Lobby
The Fairfield Lobby is so cozy

With about two years under their belt, this newer stylish hotel offers a modern feel with comfortable accommodations that allowed us to unwind after traveling and being on the ball diamonds all day, wake up refreshed and recharged, ready for a new day of adventure. Each room features plush beds, mini-refrigerators, ergonomic work stations and flat-panel TVs with world cinema streaming capability. The hotel is surrounded by some residential and cafes, stores and restaurants.

Queen Beds
Comfy plush Queen size beds

ergonomic work stations, got a little blogging done while the kids went swimming

To make traveling easier, the Marriott has a mobile app for check-in and check-out. Simply download the Marriott Mobile App on your device prior to arriving and you will be ready to go. Free high speed Wi-Fi is equally important when traveling with kids to allow everyone a few minutes to themselves to unwind without worrying about paying extra fees.

Another feature that really stood out is the doorbell on the outside of one of the rooms in our hallway that lit up in the room for the hearing impaired. I have so much respect for hotels that offer these kinds of options.

Door bell for the hearing impaired

Fueling up to start the day

We jump started our mornings at the incredible complimentary breakfast buffet offered. There was a little bit of healthy and hearty options appealing to each member of our family. I was happy with hard boiled eggs, oatmeal and Greek yogurt or fruit. Husband enjoyed choosing between three varieties of eggs, bacon or sausage patties, cereal, toast and coffee. The kids of course were hooked on the waffle station. Since the breakfast buffet was always busy we were not able to get a good photo of all the items available, however we managed to get some photos of the delicious food on our plates!

continental breakfast

While they do not offer an in hotel restaurant at this time, the Fairfield Inn & Suites have several restaurant or cafe options all within walking distance. Or for those looking for more, a short drive, uber or cab ride provide additional options including a Superstore and a movie theater down the road. The Corner Market in the hotel offers light snacks and refreshments at any hour of the day or night.

I discovered a Vietnamese Restaurant about a 2 minute walk across the parking lot and was able to enjoy a bowl of steaming pho while the kids and their dad enjoyed the pool.

Relax and Recharge

An important part of any hotel we stay at with kids is a pool. It’s almost like a rite of passage if we go to a hotel, there be a pool for the kids to burn of travel energy. Even if they only get one swim in during our stay, they are completely content. Here we found an indoor pool with a waterslide, a fitness centre and meeting room if needed.

Take time to unwind, our final thoughts

The Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott in Edmonton offered a truly comfortable, leisurely experience with first-rate hospitality. The room was clean, spacious and well-equipped. The staff were wonderful and did their best to make our stay pleasant right from day one when we called to say we would be checking in late. If we called because we needed more towels or shampoo, we got it immediately without any wait or delay.

Whether you are on a business or leisure trip, late flight arrival or early departure, the Fairfield Inn & Suties by Marriott is the perfect place to stay, dine and relax in Edmonton. It’s quiet, has everything you need and is close to all amenities.

Libman Spring Cleaning Prize Pack Giveaway

Jun 11, 2018 · 187 Comments

Spring for us always blows in quickly like the Chinook winds we are so well known for, and goes just as fast as it arrived. Our kids both play Fastpitch, in two different leagues all over Calgary and beyond. Therefore cleaning doesn’t happen as often as it should when we are running 6 days a week. However we all have our breaking point and when the dust bunnies start jumping at you, my inner clean Queen responds.

Fastpitch winds down soon enough and when this happens more thorough cleaning happens. Until then Spring cleaning needs to be quick and easy for us to tame the dust bunnies that attach themselves to our pets. Floors are the worst for us as we have a rough collie (Lassie Dog with lots of hair) and two sister cats who shed constantly.

The Libman Company has been helping clean homes since 1896 and is now offering some of their floor cleaning products in Canada. Since they are now in the Canadian market we are partnering with them to showcase some of the items available to make your cleaning a little bit easier. And if that isn’t exciting enough, we are offering a giveaway!

They have provided us with a Spring cleaning package of their floor cleaning products to review. I must say my husband was over the moon with the multi-purpose push broom to use in his man cave AKA garage!

You can also win the same Libman Spring Cleaning Prize Package shown here (8 items, over $100 value)! This package will be shipped directly from The Libman Company to your door and includes:

Mops

Freedom Spray Mop: What I love about these products is you can machine wash them saving time and money from having to run to the store to buy replacements. You can add whatever cleaning solution you prefer (ie: water and vinegar) without having to buy a special cleaning product to fit. Great on wood floors, laminate, tile, marble, linoleum and stone.

Microfiber Wet & Dry Mop: reusable and machine washable microfiber cleaning pad with 360° swivel. This works exceptionally well on our hard wood floors getting into hard to reach spots and can be used wet or dry.

Libmans Floor Cleaning Prize Pack

Brooms

Multi-Surface Push Broom: This is the broom my husband adores. He is out every night in his man cave and sweeping the floors! I guess it helps when you have the right cleaning tools for the job! The hanger tip allows for easy hanging storage.

Indoor/Outdoor Angle Broom: We love using this broom in our trailer. It’s the perfect size to pack along with us on camping trips to keep sand, dirt and dog hair out of every nook and corner and swept right out the door. Also good for indoor use or patios. The fibers on this broom are made from recycled PET bottles which we find uber cool.

Precision Angle Broom with Dustpan: We’ve been using this broom in our kitchen (which is always messy), bathrooms (so much hair) and on our hard wood stairs. It gets under cabinets and in stair corners so easily. The broom fibers are also made from recycled PET bottles, recycled soda and water bottles. We’ve tried it outside on the deck after a wind storm and it works like a charm. Great for indoor or outdoor use.

Additional Items

Big Dust Pan: We have a couple of brooms so we needed a dustpan. Works with any brooms and snaps onto any handle.

No Knees Floor Scrub: This floor scrub works great on our ceramic tiles in the bathrooms and kitchen. It gets into the grooves and gets them clean. And it pivots!

Utility Bucket: You can never go wrong with a utility bucket. Clothes, mops, sponges it’s a multi purpose bucket for all your cleaning needs. Even perfect for washing the cars this summer.

Five Spring Cleaning Hacks

If you haven’t had much time for spring cleaning like us and summer is quickly closing in, here are a few tips to get you started after a long winter to help make the most of your spring cleaning time and resources:

Hack #1 – Ceiling Fans

Use a damp cloth or wet pillowcase to wipe ceiling fans that have accumulated cobwebs and dust during the winter. If you’re unable to reach the blades this way, try using a Libman Microfiber Duster that has a seven foot extension pole for hard to reach places.

Hack #2 – Chandelier and Ceiling Fan Lights

Take the glass light bulb covers off ceiling fans and chandeliers and stick them in the dishwasher. They come out sparkling clean, and it’s less work for your tired hands.

Hack #3 – Area Rugs

Take area rugs outside on a dry day and beat them with a broom to remove dirt, lint and debris. Spray the rugs outside with a carpet deodorizer to refresh them and let them air dry. After bringing them back inside, vacuum rugs thoroughly.

Hack #4 – Linens and Curtains

It’s a good idea to freshen up pillows, blankets, comforters and even curtains as they have likely accumulated dust and odors. For a quick refresh, gather and hang linens and curtains outside on a clothesline. Spray a fabric deodorizer and let the items air dry outside. For a deeper clean, you may want to throw them into the washing machine if the tag indicates it’s safe to do so.

Hack #5 – Walls

Spring cleaning is made easier if you fill your sink with 1 cup of ammonia to approximately one gallon of water. Dip in your very clean Libman Nitty Gritty Roller Mop, remove all excess solution, and then mop your walls. This removes cigarette smoke stain, natural gas film, and even propane stains with ease. No rinsing is required if you keep the mop dry enough.

This is a sponsored post in partnership with The Libman Company. All opinions remain my own.

Win a Libman Spring Cleaning Prize Pack

Follow the instructions below to enter to win a prize pack from The Libman Company.

Contest closes on Wednesday, June 27th, 11:59pm MST. Open to Canadian residents 18+. Winner will be notified by email and will have 48 hours to respond.

Let It Snow Chef Exchange with Canadian Beef

Dec 20, 2017 · 3 Comments

This past month the Canadian Beef Centre of Excellence hosted the Let It Snow Chef Exchange Event in coordination with Chateau Lake Louise. Two similar events occurred throughout Canada this year showcasing Canadian beef and community for Canada’s 150th Birthday. We were invited to participate in the third and final leg starting at the Canadian Beef Centre in Calgary and finishing at the Chateau Lake Louise. Each event featured a Chef representing Mexico, China and here in Calgary, Chef Anton from the Philippines.

Once the chefs, ranchers, Canadian beef team and media were gathered at the centre, we started our adventure with greetings from our host, Mairlyn Smith. We were given an overview of the next 24 hours and then shuffled into the kitchen for a cooking demonstration with a beer pairing.

Nick Fodor from The Grizzly Paw Brewing Company hosted the beer pairing section carefully detailing and explaining how the beer was chosen and paired with each beef dish as they came out.

Our first sampling by Chef Anton, Bistek on Green Onion Blini Bites paired with Grumpy Bear Honey Wheat Beer. Next up Beef Wrapped Maple Parsnip Bites accompanied by Rutting Elk Red Beer prepared by Chef Jean-Francois Fortin of the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Last and the tastiest of the three in my opinion, the Beef’n Blue Wagon Wheel Bites from Canadian Beef’s own Chef Mathieu Paré paired nicely with Sleeping Buffalo Stout. The grand finale was a serving of beef and barley soup drizzled with cold-pressed organic canola oil from High River’s Highwood Crossing with a side salad to finish the demonstration leaving us all happily in a beef coma.

Hop on the bus gus. We were herded (see what I did there) onto a bus to make our way to WineGlass Ranch, a beef cattle ranch to meet Travis and Kara Eklund. These 5th generation ranchers raise healthy, high quality, hormone & antibody free, grain finished beef. We gathered to hear stories of life on the ranch, the trials and tribulations of operating a ranch through economic ups and downs and how this couple manages to do it with a smile on their face. They allowed us to wander around a little to explore some of the ranch.

Get back on the bus gus. We were on the road again only this time Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise bound. On our ride we had the pleasure of sharing company with Miriam and Donnie Wilson from the Parks Canada Historic Site – Bar U Ranch. They openly chatted about the Wildlife Corridor protection initiative as well as gave us a heritage talk about Bar U Ranch.

We arrived in Lake Louise in time for a rancher reception welcome hosted by Canada Beef Board Chair Linda Allison. Linda along with two representatives from Alberta and Saskatchewan shared stories of how the summer of 2017 wildfires affected ranches, farms and communities all over Western Canada and how communities banded together to help each other. Brew samples were provided by Grizzly Paw Brewery.

With little time to exhale, Chef Jean-Francois led us on a behind the scenes tour of the hotels large array of kitchens. We move along quite quickly in a few of his kitchens to learn its specific function while the 110 chefs he oversees busily prepare dinner for it’s patrons. Each kitchen stop features a surprise and incredibly delicious small bite for us to sample while taking it all in. We end our tour in the dining room at Lago Italian Kitchen and are seated at our assigned table for dinner.

For dinner Chef Anton and Chef Jean-Francois prepare a main dish featuring Canadian beef and sound off in an epic battle of desserts. Chef Anton delighted many with his Beef Short Ribs Sinigang served on a bed of green mango puree.

Following a delicious meal and equally satisfying desserts, this girl took herself for a quick breath of fresh air outside to inspect Lake Louise after dark and then down to the Alpine Social, the social hub of Lake Louise, to be social of course and for a night cap before retiring for the evening.

Brita ME to WE Statement Bottle: Stand Up For Clean Water

Mar 22, 2017 · Leave a Comment

Change starts here. With us, with our kids, with the companies that initiate change. The choices we make impact our future and the future of others.

Stand Up For Clean Water launches today, #WorldWaterDay, with the new limited edition ME to WE Brita Statement Bottle. Every purchase of a Brita ME to WE reusable statement bottle or specially marked product during the month of March 2017, will provide a year’s supply of clean water to a person in Irkaat, Kenya. How cool is that?! EVEN BETTER is each bottle comes with a code so you can track where and how your bottle made an impact! Can you tell I’m excited about this?!

When I first heard about this campaign it moved me, like really moved me. And it moved my kids so much so they want to spend their own money (only $19.99) to buy one of these bottles to supply a year’s worth of clean water for one person. They understand the impact and importance of this campaign with very little explanation and being able to track their bottles makes this the real deal. Whether they use their own money or not we will be purchasing bottles for every member of our family.

Where to Buy:

You can purchase these bottles at: Wal-Mart, Real Canadian Superstore, Real Atlantic Superstore, Loblaws and Zehrs locations.

About the Bottle:

  • 700 ml portable bottle with replaceable water filter
  • BPA Free
  • Dishwasher safe
  • NSF certified to reduce Chlorine (taste and odour) and particulate (Class VI)
  • Just ONE Brita Bottle filter can replace up to 300 plastic water bottles
  • BPA free and dishwasher safe
  • Remember to change your filter every 151 litres or approximately every 2 months

Official Press Release:

Brita Canada is continuing their partnership with WE on a sustainable change initiative. WE is a movement that brings people together and gives them the tools to change the world. The campaign supports a borehole in Irkaat, Kenya that provides the community of more than 1,800 with access to clean water.

The program launched in September 2016 with Brita’s specially-marked filters and pitchers. This Spring, Brita will expand the limited edition packaging to include a statement bottle.

Every purchase of a Brita ME to WE statement bottle or specially marked product will provide a year’s supply of clean water to a person in Irkaat, Kenya. ME to WE creates socially conscious products and experiences that allow people to do good through their everyday choices.

As part of ME to WE’s transparent giving model, all ME to WE Brita products come with a Track Your Impact code for consumers to track exactly where and how their purchase has made an impact – consumers can go online and enter their unique code.

In addition to reducing contaminants that appear in tap water, Brita’s products save consumers more than $500 a year compared to buying bottle water, and help to reduce the volume of plastic bottles that end up in landfills or even worse, our oceans.

Take a stand, make a change in someone’s life, buy the bottle. When you do share on social media using these tags and hashtags! #BeTheDifference #WorldWaterDay

Eat On Your Own Terms, a Food App by ClickDishes

Mar 10, 2017 · 1 Comment

We live in a World of convenience. Everyone has a smart phone, tablet, computer or some device allowing them to be online. We are able to buy our groceries or shop online, pay our bills, order take out, banking, all with the touch of a button. Technology is advancing so quickly it’s sometimes hard to keep up. We are busy, our kids are busy, our pets are busy and we have a need to get things done quickly and seamlessly. Apps are becoming more mainstream and not only changing the way we think, but the way we go about our daily business. ClickDishes is one of those apps.

A Calgary and Vancouver mobile app and platform aiming to partner with local restaurants, ClickDishes goal is simple; enable customers to order in-app, streamlining to-go ordering, dine in eating, and payment services. The developers saw a void in the market and they wanted to do something about it. No more lineups during your lunch break when you want to get your food, or having to track down your server to come to your table to place an order or to get the bill. ClickDishes aims to streamline the ordering process, allowing restaurant staff to put more focus into delivering quality meals and experiences while ensuring tables come and go quickly allowing for faster turn over. Sounds cool right? Let’s explore how the app works.

ClickDishes Food App

We were invited for dinner to test out this new app at a local Calgary restaurant called Ke Charcoal Grill & Sushi. Our first assignment, download the app and create an account. It’s free and easy to acquire. Adding a clear profile photo allows the restaurant staff to identify you.

Next assign a member of your group to be the host. Your hosts needs to sign into the restaurant and invite guests (you) to their table.

Now the fun begins as you browse the menu and order what you want, on the app, and without speaking to a server. Each time you order an item it is added to your overall order and you can view the order under order summary. In fact you can view everyone’s order broken down by individual.

ClickDishes Food App

When your meal is done and you are ready to go you have options for payment. Let the host pay, share equally or pay for your own meal. Payment options are credit card or debit credit card. Select pay on the app and Bob’s your Uncle. Easy peasy.

Ke Charcoal Grill and Sushi

We were quite intrigued by the entire app process ordering a few bites to share and a few to have all to ourselves. Ke Charcoal Grill is after all, a sushi place. We shared a table of six and the conversation was joyous and light as we all eagerly placed our orders, watching what everyone else was doing, discovering new features, asking questions and waiting patiently for our order to come.

ClickDishes is a Food App revolutionizing the way we eat when we want to enjoy a meal out.

I was invited to participate in a focus group for dinner to explore and try the new ClickDishes Food App.  All opinions remain my own.

Get to know Karen Marine Phytoplankton

Jan 27, 2017 · 24 Comments

Get to know Karen Phytoplankton. What does that mean really. Right off the bat I have to tell you I have been cleared by my doctor for trying this new product. You too need to check in with your doctor before you try anything new.

In the past two years I have been given the sentence of hypothyroidism and bursitis in both hips. The pain and fatigue from both these diagnoses I have had to endure are less than desirable and anyone who knows me will know it’s been a bit of a challenge. Five years ago I went to my Grad Reunion, full of energy, fit  and motivated. Recently things have been a little different.

What is Karen Phytoplankton? If you are like me, the first thought that comes to mind is fish food. Well you are correct. But it’s more than just fish food. Marine Karen Phytoplankton is a single ingredient super food phenomenon similar to Quinoa. Tell me more right?

This microalgae is harvested in the ocean, and packed with omega fatty acids, vitamins, A, C, D and K, beta carotene, dietary fibre, antioxidants, calcium, magnesium, selenium, iron and protein.  Approved by Health Canada, it’s known to be effective in treating everything from digestive issues, inflammation, fibromyalgia and migraines to chronic pain. Low energy and skin issues including psoriasis and eczema are also included, plus get this: anecdotally they are saying it helps Hypothyroidism. Looking forward to more research and well my findings on this.

Karen Phytoplankton
Karen Phytoplankton

What does it mean for us. Well first let me tell you when you have hypothyroidism you are tired. All the time. Motivation is hard to come by. Yes I’m on medication, but I’m still tired. Bursitis in the hips causes pains at night. When I’m trying to sleep. They say roll over and sleep on the other side, but the thing is it’s in both my hips and I’ve never been one to sleep well on my back or stomach. And there is no medication for bursitis. Only pain killers to help release the stress of the pain. And an extremely painful roller option and cold packs and and…..

Like any new product, when I heard about Karen Phytoplankton, I had to do the research before trying it. Thanks to google for making my life busier. Then I got the product and I had to do more research. Guess what? I’m writing this post and even more research. Because I really need to believe in what I’m putting into my body and what I share with my followers.

I know my body fairly well, although the past two years have turned things upside down. I’ve done the raspberry keytones, detoxes, all the things. I know what works for me, despite aging, and I know what doesn’t.

So here’s where I’m at. After getting clearance from my doctor, I’ve been taking Karen Phytoplankton for I want to say almost three weeks, the pill variation (there is also powder). The first five days I was taking one a day. You can safely take up to four. I wasn’t noticing much but remember, when you try something new like this, A) it takes time and B) you are suspiciously watching every meticulous move your body makes waiting for a reaction or response so you can tell everyone the good, the bad or the ugly.

It was about a week or so in, of taking 2-3 a day when I started to realize I was sleeping at night. I mean really sleeping. I guess I haven’t slept for so long it was a subtle change I missed. But could be anything right? Like hormones. About the same time I was noticing more energy mostly around lunch and in the afternoon. Now normally I’m yawning come 2:30pm and counting down the minutes until I pick up the kids from school. But the yawning had stopped AND (this is huge) I’m back on the treadmill (holy crap right). It’s a slow race for me as my hips sometimes tell me otherwise but I’m back baby.

I’ve been supplied with a trail run of Karen, and will continue to use it until my supply runs out. If I continue to feel good I’m going to keep buying it and using it. Most items you buy in a health food store, health and wellness or natural path practice are high, so the price doesn’t phase me, and as I’ve said it’s not my first experience experimenting with the unknown.

Our friends at Blugenics have a great offer available right now. All Karen phytoplankton products are 10% off when you order online at The Karen Project

Use Coupon code: KAREN4FRIENDS
Discount: 10% off cart total
Expires: December 31, 2017
Cannot be used in conjunction with other coupons
Unlimited usage per coupon and per person (in separate orders)

Allergen-free, Karen is available over-the-counter at pharmacies, health food stores, and health and wellness centres across Canada in pure powder or table form for $49.99.

Karen Phytoplankton

As the research into human conditions with this product continues, I want to give my friends and followers the opportunity to give it a go. I have to admit I told my nurse friend (no names Emily) about it and she was like there is no way I am eating fish food. That’s ok right? I admit the tablet smells a bit like the ocean, but who cares really.

I have a free 30 day trial for Canada residents only (excluding Quebec) to give this product a try. If you’re interested in trying Bluegenics Karen Phytoplankton, to see how it may help you, please enter below. They are also offering Canadians from coast to coast a 30-day trail challenge with a full money back guarantee.

Samples of Karen Phytoplankton were provided, however all opinions remain my own.

Pulled Pork Mac and Cheese

Jan 12, 2017 · Leave a Comment

In our cook it once, eat it 2-3 times series, we have our 3rd meal using the Slow Cooker Beer Pulled Pork we cooked earlier this week. Our first meal using the pulled pork, was pulled pork on buns with fresh toppers. We didn’t add a heavy barbecue sauce to it so as to keep the flavours simple. We put barbecue sauce on the table for those who wanted it.

Second night we enjoyed Pork Carnitas with a variety of fresh add on’s including salsa and sour cream. We even had enough pork to send everyone to school with sandwiches and wraps that day. For our last meal using up the pulled pork from day one, we made pulled pork mac and cheese. Yum right? Cooking once and extending it into a couple of meals especially when you are busy, is a great way to get through a couple of days worth of dinners.

For this recipe I opted to crisp the pork. It went from refrigerator to fry pan to warm it up, to a foil lined baking pan. A drizzle of olive oil and pinch of salt and pepper before broiling it for 5ish minutes watching it closely. You do not have to do this step but I like the change in texture and added bite. My kids were so excited about this dish it was wonderful!

What’s your favourite mac and cheese?!

Slow Cooker Beer Pulled Pork

Jan 7, 2017 · Leave a Comment

Making pulled pork is as simple as putting the pork roast in the slow cooker and letting it cook all day omitting wonderful fragrances into your home. With many options out there for flavouring your pork, it really comes down to preference, ingredients on hand and what flavours appeal to you. For example husband had some Village Brewery Blacksmith (beer) hanging around. I had a pork roast. We married the two with some spices and new a pulled pork recipe was born. I purposely kept the flavours simple as I wanted to have leftover pork for pork carnitas the next day. This is why the barbecue sauce in this recipe is served on the side.

Slow Cooker Beer Pulled Pork
Slow Cooker Beer Pulled Pork

Since I’m trying to be more organized with my meals, my motto for this year is cook once and stretch it into 2-3 meals. We typically make Braised Pork in the oven, however nothing beats getting your meat and/or ingredients ready, set into the slow cooker and the refrigerator the night before, to bring it out and on the next morning.

Beer Pulled Pork in the Slow Cooker

Looking forward to enjoying leftover pork tomorrow in these Pork Carnitas. We “pulled”, get it pulled?! a third meal out of this dish by making Pulled Pork Mac and Cheese. A little went a long way!

Returning to Christmas in November this year was the Decor Whistler Cabin with Cory Christopher, a cabin decorated with festive flair to inspire creativity in your own home this holiday season. So much fun right?!

With so many men now attending the event, the organizers created The Man Cabin. I admit, I was a little excited about exploring this cabin that included Alberta Pork and a Spirits tasting with Charton Hobbs. Yes my friends, Ladies were Welcome. They even had cigars available for purchase if you were so inclined.

With so many great things happening during your stay, it’s hard not to get caught up in the Christmas spirit.

I was asked to cover the event as Gastropost [National Post] Ambassador again this year, and brought my friend Merry along to join me. While there I learned how to cook the shit out of Indian food with Vikram Vij, make Asian salmon tartare with Chef Jan Hansen, try melt in your mouth ricotta gnocchi with Chef Mark McEwan, make turkey confit canapes with Chef Liana Robberecht, whip up a Black Forest Roulade with Chefs Anna and Michael Olson, get my pork on at the Man Cabin with Michael Olson and Alberta Pork PLUS learn how to make memories at the cottage with Nik Manojlovich. Touring some of Alberta’s Cool Little Towns

Sep 8, 2016 · Leave a Comment

One of the things we love to do is explore little towns. Whether it’s touring across Canada, the US or right here in Alberta we love to hop in the car and go somewhere new for the day. You learn so much about a community when you stop to discover what makes them unique and take the time to talk with the locals. Maybe it’s because we grew up in small little towns that we are drawn back to them so often.

We had the opportunity to experience some great little towns recently as we participated in a Cool Little Towns Tour originating in Calgary and less than an hour away. With four featured tours to choose from, Cool Little Towns encourages you to follow the routes as planned or use them as a guideline to plan your own adventure. With over 250 kilometres of Alberta’s most scenic driving routes to you should set aside the day to enjoy your drive, the beautiful views and great finds in each community. We decided on the Made in Alberta tour, a feast for your senses.

Eau Claire Distillery, Turner Valley
Eau Claire Distillery and the Turner Valley Movie Theatre turned Distillery

Cool-LT-v2

It was a Saturday morning with no commitments and we were looking forward to hitting the road. Our first stop was Turner Valley and the award winning Eau Claire Distillery. They offer tastings and a tour of their Artisanal Spirits offering a Farm to Glass experience as they produce their spirits from local Alberta grain. The distillery itself is housed in a circa-1929 Turner Valley Movie Theatre and Dance Hall and if you are hungry, there are light bites available.

Motoburrito Truck

After a few samples and purchase or two, we carried on our way and discovered MotoBurrito, an eclectic Mexican food truck featuring burritos, tacos, burgers, fries and more. Sitting on two acres of land next to Motorrad, this 14 foot food truck boasts a fun and colourful seating area with a variety of hot sauces to choose from and purchase. It was lunch time so we grabbed a seat and stayed to eat. While we enjoyed our fries, burgers and burritos we were able to watch a team roasting a pig for a pig roast they were having the next day.

Motoburrito Food Truck

On the road again and just a short drive down the highway, we sailed into Black Diamond. The Stop Coffee House and Gathering Place was on our list of places to visit for an after lunch coffee. This little coffee house boasts a spacious patio situated in front of a rustic outdoor bandstand. They feature Calgary’s Fratello coffee and homestyle café food. A rather large cookie accompanied our coffee, big enough to be shared by all four of us.

One Stop Coffee Shop and Black Diamond Bakery
One Stop Coffee Shop and Black Diamond Bakery

Our tour continued on by foot weaving our way through the town of Black Diamond. We browsed Cool Hand Luc’s Treasure Shop, bought some treats at Black Diamond Bakery & Coffee Shop and pulled up a stool at Marv’s Classic Soda Shop. All of the little stores along this side of the street were so much fun but Marv’s totally left a lasting impression! Here you can order burgers like Fonzie, Lana Turner, James Dean and more! The kids went crazy with glee as there was so much to look at including cool drinks and nostalgic candy. We shared a couple of sodas and vowed to return for a longer visit. Across the street we got lost in a unique boutique called Bohemia. This cool little store has the best prices and they carry fair-trade, local, cool items from fashion, knickknacks and jewelry.

Marv's Classic Soda Shop
Marv’s Classic Soda Shop

Watching our time we made a quick stop in Longview at the World famous Longview Jerky Shop. From Alberta Beef made jerky, pepperoni and sausages, to a butcher shop with custom orders, there are so many reasons to stop in an visit this cool little shop. Leaving with a few jerky road snacks we headed to our last stop of the day, the Bar U Ranch National Historic Site.

Longview Jerky
Longview Jerky Shop

Bar U Ranch was established in 1882 and was one of the foremost ranching operations in Canada. Recognizing that the Bar U Ranch’s long history provided an excellent opportunity to commemorate Canada’s ranching heritage, Parks Canada acquired 148.43 hectares (367 acres), including the ranch’s headquarters area, in 1991. Artists, princes and outlaws have all called the Bar U Ranch home at various times in its colourful history. Famed western artist Charley Russell, H.R.H. Edward Prince of Wales, and Harry Longabaugh (better known as the Sundance Kid) were among the famous and infamous characters who graced the ranch’s vast expanse at various times.

There’s lots to do on the ranch like visiting with the ranch hands, learning to rope a steer, saddle a horse, make bannock, repair a bridle or boil up cowboy coffee on a fire. You can wander the trails and dirt roads, pop into the stables, the post office or even the cookhouse to learn about “home on the range”. Did you know if you carry a valid Canada National Parks Pass you can use it at Bar U Ranch and get in for free?!

Bar U Ranch

Our day touring these cool little towns was a fun way to have an adventure and spend the day with the kids. We found many little gems and already planning our return visit to many of them.

#CoolLittleTowns encourages locals and travellers seeking a cool day trip or staycation to drive within one hour south of Calgary for amazing food, unique art, great boutiques, shop-local experiences, rural beauty and eclectic offerings. Visit Turner Valley, Black Diamond and Longview to enjoy a driving tour like mine.

Invivo Wines Night In

Aug 22, 2016 · Leave a Comment

Spending time in the outdoors is a reminder for us to focus on what’s important and shut off the phones for a little while. It’s a chance to spend one on one time with family & friends in a beautiful setting to experience life while enjoying delicious food and wine. I find cooking in the outdoors very inspiring and love to create new recipes!

This is exactly what we did when we went to Waterton Lakes National Park recently with a couple of friends and their families. It’s been 6-7 years since we last visited Waterton and we were very excited to share the experience together. These are a couple of friends I hang out with regularly during our Moms Who Needs Wine Evening Gatherings. There’s usually a dozen of us at any given time and we either get together at someone’s house, partake in wine tastings or visit a restaurant while getting caught up on each others busy lives. Our trip to Waterton included hiking, camping, fishing, good food & company, lots of fresh air and was exactly what we all needed. Plus it was the perfect setting to try a new wine, Invivo Wines Pinot Noir.

Originating in New Zealand, Invivo Wines was founded in 2007 by old school friends that liked New Zealand Wine so much they started a winery to make some. Now if that isn’t a story after my own heart, and one my friends and I have discussed many times! After the trails and tribulations of running a business, Invivo is proud to announce they are available in 17 countries worldwide and have one of Alberta’s fastest growing Sauvignon Blanc brands. The Pinot Noir is an easy drinking wine and one you don’t have to feel intimidated to try.

The Pinot Noir boasts aromas of cherries, black plum, blackberries and spicy herbal notes. A long finish and bright tannins round out this wine giving it a beautiful taste. We enjoyed our first sip with dinner, then the kids went off to play leaving us to sit around the fire and enjoy the rest of the bottle. We even discovered it pairs well with chocolate as we sampled an Epiphanie chocolate, and a dark chocolate with sea salt and spice.

Last year we discovered a wine called Bella by Invivo, a Sauvignon Blanc that left a lasting memory. I reached out to Invivo on Instagram about where to find it in Calgary and they responded right away with a few options. I haven’t looked for it in 2016, but sure hope the Bella is still available! So far my track record with Invivo wines has been fabulous.

As it’s a sweeter and fruity Pinot Noir we opted to pair it with marinated pork tenderloin for dinner. It would pair nicely with duck, salmon, tuna or chicken.

The nicest thing about this wine, was sharing it with friends!

Christmas in November

Nov 21, 2015 · Leave a Comment

Christmas in November in Jasper is an event held every year at The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge and a glorious celebration of food, drink and decor. It’s a place you can go to get back to nature (literally you will see wildlife everywhere), breathe in the fresh mountain air and allow yourself to get caught up in the festivities.

Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Tables
Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Tables

We were invited to attend this event, now in it’s 27th year, and partake in the tradition of getting ourselves immersed in the spirit of Christmas. How could we say no? It wouldn’t be easy with no family nearby to help with the kids, but we managed to have someone look after the dog, the sister cats and take the kids. We are fortunate to be surrounded with such great friends.

Elizabeth Baird & Emily Richards
Elizabeth Baird & Emily Richards

We were allowed to pick the sessions we wanted to attend (squee). If you’ve followed my journey, you will know I started watching cooking shows when they only appeared on PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) back in the 70’s. It was my favourite Saturday past time. In the 80’s my mom started buying me Canadian Living Cookbooks which featured Elizabeth Baird. From there TV as we know it exploded into what we call the Food Network. My love for cooking shows has never faltered and to this day they are my number one pick to watch anytime the TV is on and the remote in my hand.

Roger Mooking
Roger Mooking

The line up of presenters was nothing short of spectacular. With so many presenter options it was kind of sad you couldn’t spend time with all of them. Our sessions included one of my all time favourite Canadian Chefs Elizabeth Baird. She used to do a show with Emily Richards and the two of them team up to present at Christmas in November. Roger Mooking is a pretty cool dude in person, the super friendly and talented Micah Dew (Mixologist) we got to meet on our first night and enjoy a cocktail session with him. Love Connie & John from Charcut so I wanted to see them present, found it pretty cool to meet the spectacular married duo Anna and Michael Olson, been a long time fan of Christine Cushing, and watched Dale MacKay become the first Top Chef Canada Winner. All the presenters at Christmas in November are fun, friendly and boy can they make cooking look easy peasy.

Cured Salt Trout by Dale MacKay
Cured Salt Trout by Dale MacKay

Upon arrival you enjoy a welcome dinner in the evening. The next day you are in 3 sessions. When you are not in sessions you are eating. Important tip, do not eat breakfast and do not eat for two days before arriving. They will feed you in each food session and then again at breakfast, lunch and dinner. You will need to roll your way back to your room. Sometimes you even find treats left in your room like milk and cookies. Delicious & more eating.

The next day more sessions. Just to be clear, you have 2 full days of sessions and one final session the morning of your departure. You do not have to register for every session if you want do partake in other activities. They do have a few other activities planned for you. Or you can explore the Lodge.

Down in the Beauvert Promenade (lower level) they have a recreation and health club, fitness centre, hair salon and spa. Stop in to Fitzhugh’s To Go for a special coffee, Grizzly Paw Beer or pick up a bottle of Prosecco for later. Take your coffee to go and wander through the Mountain Galleries or browse the selection at the Fairmont store, affectionately called “Call The Kettle Black” during the festivities. If you brought the kids, they will enjoy the Kid’s or Teen rooms complete with table games to occupy any age.

The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge

If snow covers the ground there is a large array of outdoor winter sports to partake in should you choose to arrive a few days early or stay a few days later. Your last evening at Christmas in November will be a full on Gala. They treat you so well and it’s so beautifully decorated, it’s like being at a wedding. Each evening they have a band playing fun dance tunes and in between you are treated to the lovely sounds of the Willows. The food is amazing, there are delicious beverages to accompany your meals and the staff at the Fairmont treat you like Kings and Queens. My husband attended with me and he enjoyed himself almost as much as I did.

McDonald’s Mighty Angus Burger

Sep 9, 2015 · Leave a Comment

I grew up in a town in Northern British Columbia and remember fondly when McDonald’s made its appearance in our community. I was in high school and everyone was so excited to have the golden arches arrive. Outings to McDonald’s became a regular routine with friends for a burger & fries. To this day those fries still hold a special place in my heart. Did you know the very first item on the McDonald’s menu back in 1967, was a burger? Baby you’ve come a long way.

Recently McDonald’s added a new burger to their menu, The Mighty Angus. They invited a select group here in Calgary to attend a Mighty Angus Open Kitchen Flavour Session, providing us with information on the new burger, some background details of how it came to be, a kitchen tour showing us how the burger is made, and finally the best part – we got to sample the Mighty Angus Burger!

McDonald’s Canada fresh bites greeted us when we arrived

The McDonald’s Canada Menu Innovation Manager led the information session and we learned all the beef in McDonald’s hamburgers is 100% Canadian Beef. They are also made in a patty plant in Swift Current, SK. In attendance at this event were Canadian Beef representatives supporting the launch. Every time McDonald’s makes Angus patties they have a representative from the Canadian Beef Grading Agency on hand to verify they are 100% Angus Beef. The entire process was explained to us in detail, and then demonstrated in the McDonald’s kitchen. Watching the Mighty Angus Burger being made was definitely the icing on the cake…or pickle on the burger if you must.

McDonald’s Canada Grills cook the Mighty Angus to perfection

This love story starts with grilling a 100% Canadian Beef patty and toasting a sesame and poppy seed bun. We watch the love affair explode with an assortment of delicious toppings; smoky Angus aioli, hickory smoked bacon pieces, grilled onions, crisp leaf lettuce, tomato and processed cheddar cheese. This combination comes together in to one satisfying, mighty burger. It’s a story that endures.

The Mighty Angus is a delicious burger from start to finish. While I did my best to finish this large & in charge mighty beast, admittedly there were a few bites left on the plate. I almost would have preferred my bacon kept whole rather than in pieces as I felt it would add more bacon flavour, but either way I enjoyed the flavour profile and hope this burger is here to stay.

Have you tried the Mighty Angus Burger yet?

Canmore Uncorked

Apr 12, 2015 · Leave a Comment

Last week I attended the Canmore Business & Tourism Canmore Uncorked Media Launch here in Calgary at The Cookbook Co. Cooks store. This is the second year of an event that appears to have become a very popular and an anticipated food & drink festival that begins on April 7, 2015. This 13 day long festival includes special set-priced menus from 25 restaurants, incredible culinary events, cooking courses, and a long table dinner.

Canmore is roughly an hour’s drive from downtown Calgary and a favourite mountain destination we frequent as a family. There’s all kinds of fun events to attend in both winter and summertime plus several easy to challenging hikes into the mountains. Last year my husband and I attended Canmore Uncorked and mores specifically a Wine Tasting. Since we do not have family support here in Calgary it’s very hard for us to get away without the kids. But somehow we managed one night (the first time ever since having minions) and took in the Wine Tasting evening.

The media launch showcased two participating restaurants out of several. Murrieta’s and Sage Bistro are both located in Canmore. They served up three delicious bites starting with a PB & J Pork Belly from Murrieta’s. The peanut butter and jam (and an apple slaw) was a surprising, but delicious pairing with the pork belly. Our second bite was from Sage Bistro and simply a Squash and Pine Nut Risotto Ball. It packed a whack of flavour and is a definite must try. Our final bite was a collaboration between Sage Bistro & Murrietas Canmore. A light and flavourful Profiterole filled with a Chambord and Foie Gras Mousse. This was an amazing combination and definitely as good as it sounds.

Canmore has so many great restaurants and this event is a fabulous way to try many of them. Canmore Uncorked has officially started and much to my surprise there are still a few events you can still pick up tickets for: The Culinary Symphony and The Big Brunch. Head out to Canmore and take in some of the events going on during this fabulous week of food and wine also known, Canmore Uncorked.

Berry Lentil Smoothie

Feb 10, 2015 · 20 Comments

Smoothies and lentils are not two words you would normally find together. I’d never heard of a smoothie being made with lentils before so when a Canadian Lentils Contest came round for Canadian Food Bloggers, I decided to make smoothie made with lentils and enter the contest.

I didn’t win the contest but I won my kids over as they had no clue their smoothies were made with lentils!

It’s important to use cooked lentils in this recipe as they are soft and puree easily. I add everything into my blender or container at once. We enjoy our smoothies thick like milkshakes as they tend to melt quick. Adding smoothies is a great way to get an added protein boost.

Lentil, Cabbage & Sausage Soup

Jun 11, 2014 · 2 Comments

We recently had a couple of rainy, wet and grumpy kind of days in Calgary which is a good reason to have soup. More specifically Lentil & Sausage Soup. We don’t get these days very often in the Spring (seems more wind and hail the past couple of years) but when we do I’m mentally taken back to my Vancouver days where rainy, wet and grumpy days are the norm. When I lived in Vancouver I learned to live with the rain and secretly enjoy those days once in awhile. In fact Blue Rodeo’s “After The Rain’ was on my favourites play list for many years. Back in those Vancouver days.

With the cooler, damp weather comes the desire for warm comforting foods. Like soup. The typical rummaging through the refrigerator begins the search for soup ingredients. I knew I wanted either lentils or barley in the soup. So I found some green lentils and cooked the lentils in advance. I found some smoked sausage dying a slow death, so it to was in. And I always seem to have your basic vegetables on hand. I went on to pull out some cabbage for good measure. My soup was about to become a reality. My mom used to make a cabbage soup, the variations are endless.

Soup du Jour is this tasty Lentil & Sausage Soup with Cabbage. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Avocado Green Smoothie

Jan 10, 2014 · Leave a Comment

Some days we sleep in or at times oversleep ending up frazzled and rushed to get out the door. Can anyone relate? But having a time-crunched morning doesn’t mean you should skimp out on breakfast. Breakfast fuels our body and that’s where creating a quick, simple avocado green smoothie can help you start your day with energy.

Several years ago I tried out the Body For Life fitness program. Breakfasts were easy and consisted of smoothies or shakes with the addition of protein. Throughout the years smoothies have stayed with me as a quick alternative to breakfast, lunch or even a snack. And when I am in workout mode, I am always adding protein powder to my smoothies when I can find one I like.

When I had my babies, smoothies were part of the rotation and they quickly got addicted to them. I would add a little water, fruit juice or coconut milk. I always use any kind of frozen fruit—whether it be berries, mangoes, or pineapples, add cinnamon, spinach and whatever else I could find like a fresh banana. As they have gotten older I do not use fruit juice any more but rather cold green tea, water or coconut milk to decrease any added sugars. Always using frozen fruit ensures a thick smoothie.

This smoothie was a combination of all things green I could find in my fridge or counter top. And since I had an abundance of lemons and limes to use, I added some lime juice to finish it off. If you ever find your smoothies to thick add in a little water to thin it out.

When we make smoothies we use either our blender or immersion blender. If you wanted to make this one for the kids, you might want to add in a little maple syrup for sweetness but its not necessary. Mine have never had added sweeteners so they do not miss it. If you really love green smoothies, check out our Mango Ginger Smoothie, a delicious bright drink with a ginger kick!
