Cinnamon Heart Cookies are infused with cream cheese and cinnamon, baked, cooled and glazed. These festive heart shaped cookies are easy to make and fun to decorate on Valentine’s Day or any day of the year!
Cinnamon Heart Cookies
This classic recipe is made using cream cheese, flour, sugar and a touch of cinnamon offering a pleasant and unique flavour. They are easy to assemble and fun to decorate. We like to make them to give out to teachers and friends in February!
You can use a variety of cookie cutters to make these cookies any time of the year. We are partial to heart shapes and Valentine’s Day!
Perfect need not apply
We are also not about perfection when it comes to decorating these Cinnamon Heart Cookies. As long as the kids are having fun making and decorating cookies, that’s all that matters! Perfectly decorated cookies are lovely if you have the time and patience.
Icing or Glaze
How I decorate these cookies really comes down to time. For a long time I preferred the glaze made with cream cheese (above photo). It’s a little harder to control when decorating, but works if you dip the cookie right in the glaze or use a small paint brush. The last couple of years I’ve been using an icing made with corn syrup. It takes a little more time to decorate with icing but it seems to work well and they are shiny and smoother (below photo).
Both methods work, it comes down to time and preference.

Ingredients
- 1 cup butter softened
- 2 tbsp cream cheese softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2.5 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- pinch salt
Glaze
- 3 tbsp milk
- 1 tbsp cream cheese softened
- 1.5 cups icing sugar
- red or pink food colouring
Icing
- 3 cups icing sugar
- 1 tsp water plus an additional 4-5 tbsp
- 2 tsp corn syrup
- food colouring
Instructions
- In large bowl beat butter, cream cheese and sugar until pale. Mix in vanilla.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cinnamon and salt. Stir dry ingredients into butter mixture in 3 additions. Divide in half; shape into discs. Wrap and refrigerate approximately 30 minutes.
- Between parchment or waxed paper, roll out each disc to 1/8 thickness. Using floured cookie cutters (any shape you want), cut out shapes, re-rolling scraps. Place 1 inch apart, on parchment lined baking sheets.
- Bake in top and bottom thirds of 350 F oven, switching and rotating pans halfway through until golden, 8-10 minutes. Remove from plan to rack; let cool completely.
Glaze
- Using your electric mixer, beat milk with cream cheese. Add in sugar, beating until smooth. Divide glaze among 3-4 bowls (or however many colours you are using). Tint each bowl the colour of choice. Paint cookies with glaze.
- Let dry on a rack. Add sprinkles if you wish. Let glaze harden completely before storing in container.
Icing
- In a bowl stir together icing sugar, water and corn syrup. Whisk in one tbsp of water at a time mixing well. The icing consistency should be quite thick but still fall off the whisk when lifted. If too thick add a little more water until it gets to the right consistency. You do not want it runny.
- Add food colouring and mix well. Using a piping bag with a small tip or Ziplock with corner cut off decorate your cookies. Let dry on a rack until set.
